Part 2

We, the Hotdog Band had our first original single, โ€œIkaw Ang Miss Universe Ng Buhay Ko", released to coincide with the Miss Universe pageant held at the Folk Arts Theater in 1974.ย

It was a huge hit, played extensively on FM and AM stations. People began to like what they heard, but it was our second single that truly made waves.

Our second single, โ€œPers Labโ€, was released immediately after โ€œMiss Universe". Imagine Filipinos from all walks of life going crazy over what they heard. We were able to bridge the gap between all classes, initially popular with the C&D class, and soon the A&B classes joined in.

Why did Filipino original pop music suddenly become so interesting and embraced by all? The simple reason was that everyone could relate to the lyrics and music, especially teenagers, as it captured the lingo of the era, Taglish. With lines like "pers lab", โ€œice cream na nabiladโ€ and โ€œtagyawat sa ilongโ€, it mirrored the everyday conversations of the time, resonating with people across all social strata. It even became part of popular knock-knock jokes: โ€œKnock-knockโ€ฆ.who's there? Twingky...'Twingky tay nakikita, ako'y natutunaw' โ€.ย

We dominated the market, with no competition in sight. The music and recording industry began to take notice. Radio, TV, companies, and advertising agencies jumped on board. We even did a Purefoods Hotdog commercial.

Some say it was a phenomenon that engulfed the whole Philippines. There was no term to describe it initially, and so entertainment columnists and writers coined the term โ€œManila Soundโ€ to capture the essence of our music.

Thus, our original music came to be known as MANILA SOUND, born in 1974.
