By 1978, its influence was undeniable, serving as a cornerstone for the evolution of Filipino pop music. Manila Sound encompassed diverse styles, from Original Pinoy Pop to P-Rock, P-Funk, P-Folk, P-Jazz, and P-Ethnic, etc., fostering a vibrant and creative music scene. This movement unleashed a wave of creativity, giving birth to countless talented songwriters, musicians, and singers, and producing unforgettable hits that continue to resonate.
The success of Manila Sound also paved the way for the Metropop Music Festival, a songwriting competition that launched the careers of numerous artists and produced a wealth of new hit songs, significantly enriching the country’s musical landscape.
In 1978, the recording industry experienced a surge in new bands and groups. Countless acts emerged, dominating the charts and becoming the primary focus of record labels. While bands took center stage, solo artists also made significant contributions, carving out their niches in the music scene.
By 1982, the music industry underwent a dramatic shift, driven in part by the evolving tastes of audiences. Recording companies transitioned their focus from producing bands to spotlighting solo singers. Emerging artists quickly gained fame, while a new generation of talented songwriters crafted beautiful original music that propelled these solo performers to stardom.
From its inception in 1974, through its peak in 1978, and the shift in 1982, Manila Sound—representing pop original music—thrived and transformed over the decades. As it gained momentum, Manila Sound not only captured a significant share of the market but also became a driving force in shaping the Filipino music landscape. What began as a distinct sound of its era gradually adapted to new influences while retaining its core identity. By consistently reflecting the changing tastes and cultural dynamics of the Filipino people, Manila Sound has endured and evolved, continuing to inspire and influence the music scene up to the present day.
As the movement grew over the years, the term "Manila Sound", which initially referred to original pop music, came to be known by a new name—"OPM" (Original Pilipino Music). This rebranding was seen as more appropriate, encompassing the essence of original Filipino pop music. Today, this identity is not only recognized but celebrated, both locally and internationally, as a testament to the creativity and resilience of Filipino artists.
Manila Sound's legacy has laid the foundation for a thriving music industry that proudly stands on its own, with a rich repertoire of original music that continues to grow and evolve, reinforcing the cultural identity of the Philippines.
