CHRISTOPHER CROSS

Christopher Cross, the iconic singer-songwriter whose smooth, evocative melodies defined soft rock, left an indelible mark on the music industry. His career took off with his self-titled debut album in 1979, featuring hits like "Sailing" and "Ride Like the Wind," which won him five Grammy Awards in 1981, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year.

One of my most memorable experiences was working with Christopher Cross as his musical director and arranger for two shows at the Araneta Coliseum in 2000. Writing the charts for the concert was a standout experience, especially since this was his first time performing with Filipino musicians. Though he was used to playing with his band, Chris was pleasantly surprised and impressed, telling me that, even though we were reading the music, it “surely didn’t sound like it.” After the concert, instead of signing an autograph for me, he asked for mine on one of the charts that I had written—a request I’ll never forget. He also gifted me a CD with a compilation of his favorite songs, making the experience unforgettable.

We also did a duet with Angela Bofill, marking the first time they met and performed together—a special moment that added to the magic of those nights. Working with Christopher Cross was truly an honor and a memorable highlight in my career.
