HOTDOG

Hotdog was a pioneering Filipino band that emerged in the 1970s, known for creating and popularizing the Manila Sound. This distinctive genre blended Western pop, rock, and disco influences with Filipino lyrics and sensibilities. Their breakout hit "Ikaw ang Miss Universe ng Buhay Ko" marked the beginning of the Manila Sound era, followed by other iconic songs like "Pers Lab," "Panaginip," and the timeless classic "Manila." Through their music, Hotdog captured the essence of Filipino life with humor, wit, Taglish lyrics, and catchy melodies, helping to define and solidify the Manila Sound as a unique cultural phenomenon.

In late 1973 to early 1974, Dennis and Rene Garcia were forming a new band. I was one of the first musicians they asked to join as the keyboard player. It was an exciting time as Hotdog was coming together, and many singers and musicians were considered for the lineup.

Eventually, the six of us became the original Hotdog: Dennis Garcia (bass), Rene Garcia (guitar & vocals), Ella del Rosario (vocals), Mon Torralba (guitar), Jess Garcia (drums), and myself, Lorrie Ilustre (keys). Later on, Gina Montes joined as our female singer. The energy and vision during those formative months were unforgettable, laying the groundwork for what would soon become a defining era in Filipino music.

The band was focused primarily on writing and recording original songs. We rehearsed countless hours, crafting new material and refining our sound. There was an exciting energy during those early sessions, as we all knew we were creating something fresh and unique that would leave a lasting impact.

Our performances were just as crucial to the process. We performed in various venues across the Philippines, honing our stage presence and developing a rapport with the audience. Each show helped us grow as a band, and the energy from the crowd encouraged us to push our limits creatively.

In addition to our live performances, Hotdog made TV guesting and specials, showcasing our music to a broader audience. One of our most notable achievements was making a movie with the same title as our first album, Unang Kagat. It was an exciting venture that allowed us to bring our music to the big screen and connect with fans in a new way.

We also had the privilege of fronting for several renowned acts, including Hues Corporation, Blue Magic, and Kenny Rankin. Sharing the stage with such talented performers was both inspiring and humbling, and it opened doors for us to reach even wider audiences.
